This happened in Alabama. The father had custody, but the grandmother is the one who had the girl run the yard until she collapsed. From what I remember of the case, the mother really should have not lost custody, but the father had an attorney and the mother did not.

Too late to decide he's not father material; you've already decided that. But until he starts filing paperwork with the court, and as long as you stay off state aid of any kind then you can avoid him all you want.
