Would appreciate anyone giving me advice on this as I totally do not understand the laws relating to this. To begin with recording encrypted DVD's on a DVD recorder and music files from commercial online music sources where you pay a fee to download unlimited music to your computer only which you can't burn to CD's, is illegal. I fully know that & its a further crime to sell this stuff. Before I go on, I'm not talking about downloading movies online, I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole. However, there are ways to record DVD's and burn restricted music files through free software programs on the internet for DVD's, an obscure software program for CD's, and devices sold by companies that take protection off DVD's to enable someone to record them, etc. You can find these ways through the internet. For further clarification, the idea of DVD recorders being sold is basically a fraud put on the consumer because there is a chip in every set to prevent recording of most comercial DVD's but there are ways to get around this which I'm asking, if you have that knowledge, can you legally include and sell it in a book without getting legal ramigications, both civil and criminal?

My question is, if I wrote a book telling but not advocating people where these websites, software downloads, devices are, am I breaking the law and am I legally open to lawsuits? I figure this is probably not worth my time to do as the legal minuses outweigh any financial profit. Can someone please advise me from a legal stand point in plain English not an ethical one because ethically I don't see anything wrong with giving people information. Thannks

So this book is going to be about 4 pages long?

I can get this information online for free IF I needed it.

And with programs free for the taking, your book would be worthless.

Unless you've written a new codec or a better compression alogrythem than Sorenson or FLicks then it's a waste of time.

That was a fast response. Yeah you can get the info to do this on the Internet, but it takes alot of time & then even with it, you need to know how to do this stuff in plain simple English. I think there are alot of people who'd buy this short type of guide book but by writing/selling something of that nature aren't you subjecting yourself to criminal & civil litigation, or is that legal?

Remember the DeCSS case a couple of years ago? It's a violation of the DMCA provisions of the copyright code to provide instructions on how to bypass security on copyrighted works. Does that mean that you will get caught or in trouble? No, but it does mean that you COULD get caught and get in trouble, and you'll need to figure out whether it's worth the risk or not.
