While waiting for the state or country name, I can say that mockumentary filmmakers are sued with some frequency, for a whole host of reasons.

The claims asserted have included defamation, misappropriation of a name/likeness, invasion of privacy, copyright infringement, breach of contract, fraud. Some suits have been won by the filmmakers in court and some have been won by the plaintiffs in court and some have been settled out-of-court.

What they all have in common is the cost of pursuing the actions. These are not inexpensive suits for any of the parties.

For some of the better known mockumentary actions, you can search for Sacha Baron Cohen's Borat and Harry Shearer's This is Spinal Tap. Search as well for Michael Moore and Hank Azaria.

Because mockumentaries tend to be lawsuit magnets, a filmmaker should make sure to secure all proper permissions and waivers and have an attorney involved from the start.
