What is the name of your state? California.
My husband wants to hold a video game tourney and give away cash prizes. Does he need permission from Xbox, etc. prior to putting on this event?

You won't need permission from Microsoft (Xbox) unless you use the trademark in advertising, then, depending on how the mark is used, you might need permission.

As far as the games are concerned, if you are using purchased copies of the game, then you won't likely need permission from the software companies either. However -- if you are going to put anything up on a "jumbo" screen or something like that so that many people can view the action, then you probably WILL need permission from the software companies to legally do so.

You will likely also need a license from your local city, county or state to legally run such a game.
