What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? CA

Can a social security number be used as a California Tax ID number on a 1099? The person who gave me the 1099 left that space blank and says they don't have a CA Tax ID number. Thank you for your help.

It is not uncommon for sole proprietors to not have state tax ID numbers if they do not have regular employees with regular payroll. Using their SSN would be a normal way to identify themselves.

Thank you so much for the quick response. Just so I'm understanding this correctly... A social security number can be use as both a federal ID number AND a state ID number when completing a 1099? I wonder why the person who was doing my taxes was so insistent that my 1099 must have 2 different numbers.

Did you go to a year-round tax person, or did you go to one of those places that pop up around tax time?

The clinic itself may be perfectly fine but the individuals are going to vary in skill. They likely don't spend a lot of time teaching them the ins and outs of completing 1099s.

I was hoping to have them done and filed that day. Instead I ended up having to wait 5 weeks for another appointment. That's what I meant by the hard way.
Was this a free clinic or something like that? Otherwise, I do not understand why you didn't immediately go somewhere else.

It was the only one in my area that I could afford (free).
Sometimes, unfortunately, you get what you pay for. You could try doing it online, although you would have to pay for at least your state return doing it that way. You could also try getting the forms and instruction books and doing it by hand.
