What advice can you give for a 14 yr old who shoplifted ($10-15 pair of earrings) while on a school field trip in Marion County yesterday? My niece initially denied involvement, but recently fessed up to her mother. Security tapes are being reviewed...should she come forward and confess or wait to see if she is "caught"? What is the typical punishment??

Jeez. If she were my kid she would have been marched back to the store to return the earrings and admit wrongdoing. But hey if mom wants to let her off the hook until caught, that is her stupidity.

Typical punishment through the courts? Fines, court costs, community service, maybe an essay. Also expect a civil demand. yet what is her punishment at home? Or is that determined by whether or not she gets "caught"?

She can also expect the SCHOOL to either suspend OR expell her for her criminal ways. She will face punishment from them.

Please, PLEASE..... tell us that you do NOT have any children and never intend to!!!

Why is that relevant??
Jetx, you really want people to PARENT and let their children learn right from wrong?

A typical punishment? My child would HAVE NOTHING fun in their life -- no movies, no phone, no computer, no novels, no radio, no cds, no ipod, no toys, no social life. They would regret ever thinking of, let alone following through, on shoplifting. That would be TYPICAL for my household. Typical for this family --- apparently nothing unless the delinquent gets caught.

Want to make a bet, this is not the child's FIRST thievery and will not be the last?
