What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? WV

Hello, i'm 18 and live alone and want to know if i legally can sign my self out of school when i am sick and have doctors appointments and at lunch every once in a while. I get a child support check and get help from my grandpa because i don't have a job right now since i'm still in high school.

Thanks in advanced

You need to talk candidly with your high school principal about your situation as soon as possible.

Are you a senior?

Are you on track to graduate class of 2010?

Ok, - then what DID he claim?

Please try to expand a bit on the situation and what has happened.

AND

Are you living withing the school district boundaries of the school you are attending?

Are your parents in the picture? I realize you are 18, but are they trying to assert control?

My parents are fine with it. they actually think its a burdan to come and sign me out. The principal said since i'm still getting help from my grandpa that i'm not on my own pretty much.

Exactly HOW does the principal know this...and why would it be any of his business in the first place?

When you need to go to the doctor - who is your principal saying needs to sign?

Please - spell out the whole situation, in a narrative. Tell us what is going on so we can give accurate advice.

I also asked a very important question - do you still live in this school district?

the reason im not telling you the whole story is because they have said no multiple times and seem to be giving different reasons everytime pretty much

Well then, we can't really help you.

Go to your doctors appointment and when the school tries to punish you tell them you are an independent adult and see what the fall out is.

Tell me ... is he going to physically stop you from leaving school grounds (thus opening himself up to a false imprisonment situation)?

Good Point zigner... i guess the school rules take away some of my rights or something. should i just tell them that i'm going to sign myself out and say if they don't let me im leaving anyways becasue i am my own guardian and my freaking parents are ok with it anyway. that will just save them a trip to the school to check their 18 year old son out like a child

What your principal is trying to prevent is you "calling yourself off sick" or leaving, and then you accumulate so many absences, you fail, and end up a dropout statistic. You have to be in attendance to 90% of your classes, or you automatically fail, even if you are passing. This means you can't miss more than 10 % of each class. You can't miss the last period of the day, or after lunch, more than 10% of first period. You have to be really careful about attendance. It's a state requirement. Your principal is trying to cover his butt and keep you there, no matter what.

But, legally, he can't. You are 18, and it sounds like you are away from your parents. He can ASK that you have your grandparent's permission, but he can't legally demand it. Just realize the motives, and the principal needs you to be there so you don't become a dropout. He's watching out for you both.

Good luck, and stay in school!
