1926 Life Insurance Policy

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? NC

We found a life insurance policy in my grandather's name dated 1926. The company that we understand now owns it wrote us a letter from their research department that the policy is too old, and they have no record of it.

We are wondering how we can find out if the policy is worth anything. Should we contact the state insurance office? ask a lawyer?
