What is the name of your state? DC

Hello, My Question is I don't know in which state I should file my taxes in.

I am stationed at WRAMC, in Washington DC and have been here since Feb of 2005. My orders for mobilization state my HOR as MD. (have been on active duty since 2003) I sold my home in MD in April 2003 and was stationed at ft Dix NJ from April 2003 Until Feb of 2005 (so I filed taxes in NJ), for those 2 years. Now that I am in DC do I file taxes here??. Of course I cannot change my HOR on my mobilization orders. Any help would be great!

Go easy on the acronyms. Most of us are civilians here.

You file taxes in the state in which you are a resident. If you are military, three are special rules.

If you were "mobilized", I take that to mean you are a reservist, in which case your home of record remains the state in which you are a resident.

Generally, your state of residence is your home of record unless you have taken steps to change your state of residence. You cannot change your HOR but you can change your state of residence.

You do this by registering to vote, obtaining a driver's license in said state, and registering your vehicle.

You were probably a Maryland Resident during the time you actually filed in NJ, but now that it's done, not much sense in changing it.

Your residence remains New Jersey until you change it by doing what I listed above. You must also inform your branch of service that you have changed your residency so they can withhold taxes for the proper location.

See a tax professional to find out which is the best state to be a resident of.
