3 months training visa, can I extend or change status?

What is the name of your state?Tx
I have a friend who is here for training and has 2 months visa. Is there any way for him to change his visa status or legally do something to stay here beyond his visa expiration time?

What type of visa does he have? If it's a J-1 training visa, then he cannot extend it for longer although he may be able to change status to a different visa classification if he is otherwise eligible.
