Place: New Jersey
Issue: A neighbor in the same apartment complex renewed her lease for 30 days until this March 31 thinking settlement on her house would go thru. Things got held up in court and she had to renew for another 30 days until April 30. When she told the landlord of her intentions the landlord told her that she had someone that she wanted to fill the apartment with a 12 month lease and that she wouldn't renew for April. Taking this as a verbal notice this isn't legal, right?
The landlord told her that if she stayed for April she would double the rent for April. Can she do this in New Jersey?

Unless there is rent control in NJ, she can do it.

Your friend's lease is expiring, it needs to be renegotiated, and you know what that means. The landlord evidently has someone better in mind.

Unless the lease is self-renewing, a verbal notice is fine, just part of the negotiation over a new lease.
