I live in Omaha, Nebraska. The lease for my apartment was up Sept. 1, 2000. I have just been paying month to month at a higher rent with no lease. I have found a place that I want to move into, but they will only hold it for two weeks without paying rent. My apartment manager tells me that I have to provide 30 days notice from the beginning of a month. That means I will either have to pay rent at both places for a full month or risk losing the new place and still pay both rents for two weeks. I understand why they need thirty days notice (to rent it out again), but why from the first of the month. Also, haven't I fulfilled my contractual obligation of the lease? Do I have any options? What would you advise me to do?

Its just part of the cost of moving......

Most people pay for 2 places, for a week or two..., and you are entitled to your security deposit back, so take lots of pictures because he will probably try and stiff you.

Why the 1st of the month most states have laws where the 30 day notice starts the day you normally pay rent...

Remember it works BOTH WAYS......if the landlord wanted to evict you or raise the rent and gave you notice today, it wouldnt take effect til MARCH 1st!

You could ask the landlord to keep your security, use it for next months rent..or move fast so he still has a chance to get new tenants in on Feb 1st...but you would still be entitled to some of your security back, since it is illegal for him to get FULL rent on the same apartment from 2 people.
