A qualifying "hardship" for a hardship withdraw is defined by each 401(k) plan. Hardship withdrawals are not allowed by all plans, and of those that do, the reason allowed by one may not be allowed by another.
You will have to read the Summary Plan Description (SPD) provided by your employer to all 401(k) participants.
