I am a witness in a case and I was wondering how the 5th amendment works in a criminal case. Do you have to plead the 5th just once in the begining of the trial or do you have to plead the 5th for every question asked? thanks for any help.

I am a law school graduate. What I offer is mere information, not to be construed as forming an attorney client relationship.

Once at the beginning.

just as an fyi - The Fifth Amendment provides several critical protections:

prohibition against double jeopardy (you may not be tried more than once for the same offense)

prohibition against self-incrimination (you may not be forced to testify against yourself)

prohibition against deprivation of life, liberty or property without due process of law

The making of statements that might expose you to criminal prosecution, either now or in the future. The 5th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from forcing you to provide evidence (as in answering questions) that would or might lead to your prosecution for a crime.
