tomorrow i am working a split shift from 8am-2pm, then 10pm-12am for a cashier meeting. the next day i am scheduled at 5:30am for my regular 8 hour shift. is it legal for them to schedule me for an 8 hour shift only 5 1/2 hours after a mandatory meeting?

Yes. No Federal law and no CA law that I can find, requires there to be 8 hours between shifts. The only exception would be if you are working under a contract that makes such a requirement.
