What is the name of your state? Fl but this happened in Ga..

I opened up the mail box yesterday and found an envelope with my hubby's name on it. Curiousity got me so I opened it. It turned out to be a bill from a collection agentcy. So, I went in and called them. They told me this was an old cable bill dated back in late 1995 and early 1996. I laughed and told the lady that it took this long to find him. 10 yrs later. It's not like he went into hiding or something.
Anyways, she said they would be willing to accept half of the bill and would I like to pay that over the phone at no charge to me. I told her no, I wasn't paying anything, that my husband would contact them and make arrangements for payment.
What I would like to know is**************.....
Is there any type of statue of limitations on things like this?
and
If hubby decided not to pay it, what could this agentcy do? besides harrassment.....

I have never left my ends open, nor have I ever been sent to collections. But come on, 10 yrs later and it never showed up on the credit history either...

Most definitely. SOL in FL is 4/5 years, SOL in GA is 4 years. Whether or not the FL SOL has 'tolled' (been stopped) depends on whether or not he left the state before the SOL had expired.

They COULD sue him, but they may not take it that far. Who is the collection agency ? If it's not for thousands of dollars, they're more likely to just harrass and hope you throw money at them to make them go away. For a 10 year old debt they paid a fraction of a cent/dollar and they're hoping for a LOT more, hence their willingness to accept 50%.

If it were me, I'd send them a cease and desist letter and tell them to take a hike and never bother you about it again.

The credit agentcy is Afni. I've never heard of them but, they are out of Bloomington, In..

Yeah, I couldn't believe what the lady was telling me. She said it was for a cable bill from late 1995 and the first of 1996. What I don't understand is we have always been listed in the phonebook, if you do a search for us on the net, you'd find us. But, 10 yrs later, on an old bill, here it is 2006 and now they contact him. It almost sounds like a scam of some sort. Just to get some money. The bill is only for $150.00 but that $150 could be well spent buying clothes or shoes for our kids.
It's funny how quick little feet can out grow shoes...:)

Thanks again Ladynred ;) ;)
