A week ago, I came back home to find my desk and two of my laptops submerged in water. The roof had leaked heavily right on top of them. One of the laptops is now totally "fried". I ask my landlord if he would cover the damage and he was pretty evasive about it. Who is liable in this case? There is no renter's insurance. I live in New Jersey. Thank you in advance.

NO RENTERS INSURANCE>>>>>>>then NO money!

You might try and claim it on his homeowners policy, but i think the only way you could make a claim is if there was leaking before in that exact spot, and you notified the landlord and he did NOTHING, then if the ceiling leaked or collapsed you would have a valid claim....

But since you knew NOTHING about a leak, or else you would not have put the laptops there...you are SOL.

Yet renters insurance is around $200 a year in NY and NJ
