I am an American citizen who pays US taxes, but currently lives abroad. I plan on returning to the States in 2001 to start an advertising agency. I am currently researching how to set up a LLC in NY or CA, but I haven't decided where to base the company. The concept of the company is to be virtual, without an office, so to speak. Technology is such that people can work from their computer anywhere in the world. As mentioned before, I am living abroad at the moment, so I don't have a US address. This seems to be a problem. Is there something I can do in the meantime, while I am away, to get the ball rolling on this business (i.e. Trademarks, filling, etc.) Can I operate out of a P.O. Box address? I already have one client and I would like to start informing potential clients of this soon-to-be-formed company even if it is not yet in full operation. Any advice would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

SURE -- AMONG THE APPROACHES WOULD BE:

1. The best is to use a "rent a suite" firm like HQ or World Wide Business Centres that provides a mail and delivery address for you and forwards you the mail you receive. The fees are not major. ALso, when you relocate during the start up phase you could actually rent one of their offices at that location --it's more pricey than raw space but very professional.
2. Get a friend or family member or lawyer to do allow you to use their address.
3. Many of these things can be done with a Private Mail Box, such as from Mailboxes, etc.
4. You may not need a US mail address.
