My husband was in a car accident a couple of months ago. He was hit by a driver who ran a red light while looking at his cell phone. He readily admitted fault and while my husband was not hurt, our car had several thousand dollars worth of damage. The other driver's insurance company (Farmers) agreed to pay for a rental car while our car was being repaired. When we rented the car, we signed up for the optional insurance - figuring we were going to have the car at least 3 weeks, we thought it was probably a good idea. When we returned the rental car, Enterprise told us that we owed $458 for the insurance. I told them that Farmers was paying for our rental car because their driver was at fault. Enterprise said that Farmers does not cover the cost of insurance. My problem is I don't feel that we should be responsible for this amount of money. We would not have had to rent a car if their driver hadn't hit us and no one told us (neither Enterprise or Farmers) that we would be responsible for the cost of the insurance - it actually was more than the cost of renting the car. Do I have any recourse here? What can I do? Enterprise has already charged my credit card as we had to present it when we rented the car.

The other driver's insurance company is only obligated to provide you with basic transportation, anything extra (like insurance) is on your dime. Why didn't you have your insurance company provide the insurance for the rental?

The extra insurance is OPTIONAL. Insurance is part of the normal cost of owning a car and has nothing to do with the accident. You should have asked the adjuster before signing up for the insurance. You are going to have to pay for that yourself.
