What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Connecticut.

I owned a computer store in Wallingford. Someone I knew personally dropped their laptop off to be fixed because her boyfriend destroyed it by either dropping it or punching the LCD Screen. I charged them so far only for the replacement LCD screen because that was the most apparent issue wrong with it. Then I took the front screen apart and noticed the hinges were also damaged so i told them that the front bevel, and hinges needed to be replaced as well. They didn't return my call or pay me for the additional parts. This went on for months. Finally their mother who was the true owner of the laptop called and demanded the laptop be returned. I wanted to charge $49 for a diagnostic fee but waived that and returned it in the state it was in originally, and shipped it with the replacement LCD screen. The mother had decided to press charges with her town police department claiming I was being malicious and destroyed the laptop. I had a detective call me last night who seemed to believe everything they said... also claimed they had pictures of what the laptop looked like before, and after. I told him that anyone can produce a picture of a working laptop just look on the internet and you can find it. He said he could charge me with Destruction of Property and have me arrested. I told him that the laptop was already destroyed when It was brought to my computer shop.

Shouldn't this go to the police department in the town where my computer shop is located or her residence? Secondly isn't this a small claims matter?
