My 23 year old son wishes to adopt his ex girlfriend's child whom he helped raise for 4 years. He has the child every weekend and currently gives her money every week to help support the child. She does not know the identity of the natural father or his whereabouts. My son and the child's mother are not together, but the child looks at my son as his father. The mother wants my son to adopt the child so that he is legally the father before she marries another man next year. What are the adoption laws and procedures for such a case in Michigan? Can my son simply adopt the child with the mother's approval even though they are not together and never will be?
