I'm trying to start an Adult site is there any state, local, or federal laws I need to know. I was told by a friend that he has to pay $1,000 for every girl's pictures he posts on the internet. I was told that there is no Obscenity Laws in Montgomery county(in which I live) Now I'm confued.

Off the top of my head during lunch break.....

1. If you post child porn, you will violate federal law every time someone in another state downloads/views a picture. Also, it may be that some child porn laws forbid porn that _appears_ to depict children, even if the models are actually over 18 and you say so prominantly.

2. The pictures are copyrighted unless you take them yourself: you have to pay a licensing or royalty fee to the photographer and maybe to the model. A flat rate fee is probably easiest to negotiate and administer.

3. Tennessee will try to prosecute you for violating their obscenity laws because the pictures you post violate the 'Podunk County community standards.' Buy insurance and put the ACLU on speed dial. (I don't recall the result of the actual case where this happened. Maybe IAAL knows?)

4. Other countries may try to prosecute you too. Since our courts are issuing restraining orders to foreign web sites with great regularity, the other countries will argue that they should be able to restrain you too. We need a Berne Convention on international internet law!

Ciao
