I am a 17 year old female and I have graduated high school one year early with college credits, and will be enrolling in a local college in the fall. My dad would like for me to move out and I would like to be able to live on my own as well, he considers me mature enough to make my own decisions and support myself, but fears that because I am 17 I am not allowed to move out. He also worries that he will be held legally responsible for any trouble I find myself in - however we believe its very unlikely I will find myself in any trouble. I will be 18 in November and while he says he does not mind if I stay until then, we both would rather I move out. What are the laws and legal technicalities behind the age to move out of your parents home, as well as the extent to which the parent is legally responsible for the child's actions? Thank you!

You know, I never thought about this when I went off to college at 17, and it was out of state no less. 2 out of 3 of my siblings also went to college at 17. (Not that we're brilliant, just that the cut off date for kindergarten in our school district was January 1st.) The one who was 18 when starting college was the only one who lived at home and commuted.

Were you thinking of living in a dorm or renting an apartment? You're really overthinking this if you're considering living in a dorm.
