What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? FL
Ladies & Gents, I am new to the US and seeking some advice on what appears to be a very dubious credit report anomaly. In recent months my wife has become more credit conscious by using Credit Karma. She has used it for a while but now we are looking at home loans she wanted to up her game. Her credit wasn't great as card usage was low and most things got brought outright. We started to work on this and over the 6months it was on a steady incline toward 700. Today (08-16-2017) she check her Credit Karma and it's plummeted to below 650. Closer inspection reveals a collection agency has recorded a delinquent debt of $900 (for a comms provider in AZ) using the date 05-25-2017.

My first question is; "How has it taken over three months for this to appear on her report?". She checks her report every week and this has only just shown up.

After a bit of digging the communication company are saying that she never returned their equipment in 2013 when she left AZ. She did but 4 years later does not have the postal evidence to disprove their claim. It was 4 years ago. Naturally the company automatically put my wife at fault and assumes her guilt as they couldn't possibly have employees that steal, misplace things, forget to scan items etc.

My next question is; "the comms company state they passed the debt to a collection agency on the 9-9-13, called Pinnacle financial. It has only now been recorded on her credit report as 05-25-2017. Should the recorded date not be when it was initially sent to the first collection agency?"

"How can a debt elapse for 4 years and she have had no communication from them. She had a mail forwarding set up and they have her email for means of contact. Naturally we can't prove that she had mail forwarding, so once again she is presumed to be at fault". She has not had a sniff of communication from any one regarding this debt and only now has it been put on her credit report. Is this even legal?

Sorry it's long winded but this seems hugely unjust as to how a debt can be left for 4 years with no communication and then pops up on her credit report at the most inconvenient time.
