What is the name of your state? Delaware
my mother and stepfather have been married about 14 years. both have children, but none shared (married later in life). sfather 13 yrs older than mom. sfather just diagnosed w/beginning stages of alzheimers (some short term memory loss; very mild now but will get worse). mom will have much to deal with. she's worried about how to pay for his long term care, and protecting her assets for her kids. can the state take everything she owns? will she have to work beyond retirement (1 yr away). she thinks she needs a divorce. she doesnt want one. he will still remain with her for as long as possible. isn't there any way to stay married but keep assets apart? he has lifetime rights to her house (but that is changing Monday since he can't maintain the house if something were to happen to her) and she's been advised it's not a good idea for him to drive, so she's taking care of that. this whole situation is sad. this is truely a horrible disease.

thank you for your insight,
Laurie

She needs to talk to a certified financial planner--there is a way to accomplish what she wants, but it must be done with awareness of some of the rules and regulations that come with dealing with someone with medical needs who might possibly dealing with Medicare/Medicaid situations.
