Am I married???

Hello there.... I got married on October 17, 1998. However, my husband and me found out that he was not yet divorced from a previous marriage in 1982 - even though he thought so. He went to a lawyer back then and started everything but the final court document has never been signed. Whatever - So he got a divorce from his previous wife in April 1999 (6 months after we got married).

My question: Is our marriage legal? Since I want to leave him - do I have to get an annullment or a divorce or am I not married anyway?
