If I say "I do" in a marriage ceremony and do not turn in the marriage licence to obtain a marriage certificate, am I legally married to my 1st husband?

****Other important facts******

Five years after my seperation from my 1st husband, I remarried. Question? If I am legally married to my 1st husband by ceremony only, is my second marriage legal?

I only want one husband:~) not two. All advice, legal advice and comments welcome.

there is a court order "in-proper" I filed against my 1st husband. Will the filing in-proper, instead of a divorce mess things up for child support owed?

in most states the marriage would not be valid until it was filed in the court house records. if you did not mail in the license, it was not recorded, you would not be married.

now if you did that in a common law state, there could be a problem. you were presenting yourself as husband and wife and therefore you could possibly have had a common law marriage.

where did it occur?
