I rented tables from a store in town. When I returned them I went inside to pay what I owed, noone followed me out of the store to help unload, so I put them beside the building. Later that afternoon they called, I told them what I had done, they said the tables were not there. The owner came to my house and accused me of stealing them. The next day the police asked about the tables, I told him what I had done. I don't think that I'm responsible for the tables, what do you think? Just a little more information, I have a signed rental agreement saying the tables were returned, it has the day and time I brought them back on it and I signed at the bottom, does this mean anything?

My response:

I believe you are. You failed to have anyone from the store take possession of the chairs, etc., and by leaving them outside, subjected the property to theft. It makes no difference that you placed them on the "property" of the store. You should have had your receipt marked as "returned" and / or "delivered" by a person in charge.

Just a little more information. I have a copy of the rental agreement where I signed saying the tables were returned. I realize noone from the store saw the tables but doesn't the signed rental agreement mean anything?

My response:

How can "you" sign anything to say that something was returned? "You" don't work for the store. So, "you" having signed the receipt is meaningless. The fact remains that no one from the store "signed" your receipt. Re-read my last sentence from my initial answer, above.
