UPSET IN NJ

Guest
Six years ago a young girl was murdered in her home next door to my in-laws. My husband, who was living with his parents at the time, was asleep when a neighbor knocked on his door to alert him of the murder. That evening my husband opened his door to the family of the victim and allowed them to stay in his parents home until they could go back into their home. The police interviewed him that evening but did not take him in for questioning.

One year later a detective took him in to answer a few questions and to take his fingerprints. Four years later detectives came to our door and again took my husband in for questioning. They questioned him for several hours then asked him to take a lie detector test which he took and passed. After the test the detectives questioned him some more and asked if he would be willing to submit DNA samples. He did so voluntarily and paid for the samples to be drawn. He was brought back home well after midnight and terrified that they might be considering him as a suspect. We talked his experience over with family members who advised us to obtain a lawyer. Two weeks after that horrible night we retained a lawyer. Two months later my husband was named as a suspect. The mayor of our little NJ community contacted many of our neighbors letting them know he would be named a suspect, her husband actually stated that since we got a lawyer he must be guilty, one newspaper actually printed his name, other news media just said a neighbor was a suspect. We were shocked, scared, and completely humiliated and hurt by these terrible accusations.

I've read quite a bit about DNA and know that it exonerates the innocent. It has been two years since my husband voluntarily paid for and gave his DNA to detectives, we have not been given the results of the DNA tests, our lawyer does not return our phone calls, and my husband's name continues to pop up in this certain newspaper attaching him to this horrible crime. This year the prosecutor had a chance to clear my husband but decided to have no comment. Our lawyer told us during our second and last visit with him two years ago that his name may never be cleared. People are getting off of death row because of DNA. Why won't they clear my husband? Many mistakes were made in this investigation - leaking an innocent man's name to the press is only one example.

Please lead us down the proper path. We want our lives back.
