My fiance and I want to get married in the Catholic Church in April of 2002. He was previously married through a justice of the peace in a non religous ceremony. Both he and his ex-wife are protestants. We were told my the Church that he needs an annulment which can take anywhere from one year to a year and a half. Is there a quicker way to get an annulment that the Catholic Church will honor? We live in Los Angeles, California, and my fiance's previous marriage was also in California.
My response:
If you're looking for an annulment through the Protestant Church, I'm sorry, but we don't practice Canon Law. And, from what I understand, you'll need this form of Annulment in order to be married in the Catholic Church. I don't know if you, or anyone, can "hurry" a religious group into granting an annulment - - unless, of course, you're willing to donate vast sums of money to pay off their new gymnasium, or their new wing to the high school. Then you'll get all sorts of attention.
If he's looking for an annulment through the State of California, he can't get one if he's already divorced; i.e., there's nothing left for the State of California to annul.
