I've heard that "Ignorance of the law is no excuse." Could you please tell me if Texas has any unusual laws that other states don't have?What is the name of your state?

Some other states have a similar concept but in my opinion the strangest and most impacting criminal law in Texas is the law of parties. It enables a person to be held accountable for the crimes of their co-defendant the same as if they did it themself. Its not the same as being an accessory, where it has to be proven that you were enabling and participating in the specific act that makes up the crime. Its a hard concept to explain, but basically in most states if you agreed with your co-defendant to assault someone and in the process your friend pulled a gun and stole the guy's wallet, than at the most you could also be charged with robbery. In Texas you'd be charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon and the allegations would be that YOU were the one holding the gun. Each guy would be charged with using the gun.

Our sexual assault statutes are also worded in such a way as to make for some strange outcomes when dealing with juveniles. It is a crime in texas to have any sexual contact with someone under the age of 14, with no exceptions regardless of how close in age the individuals are. So if a 14 year old had sex with a 13 year old classmate, that's a first degree felony and they would have to register as a sex offender for 10 years. And if two 13 year old's had sex? They'd BOTH be charged with agg. sex assault of a child with each one being the victim of the other.

There's also a law that allows blind people to hunt as long as they use a laser sight.

I'm sure I can think of more later...

Ahhh... I missed that ruling by the Federal Appeals Court. The court has declared that the law is unconstitutional.

The last I had heard, the case was still wending its way through the process. Obviously, I didn't get the update.

The law is still on the books, it's just not enforceable.
