What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama

My boyfriend is 18, graduated from high school, and enrolled in college. But the age of majority in alabama is 19. His mother is unbearable. His stepdad is an alcoholic. Its almost essential to his sanity that he's out of his house. But although he would be able to make it on his own, at 18, he can't sign a lease or have his car in his name. I recommended trying to get emancipated because I thought it would be simple seeing that he has graduated. But from what I'm reading online, it won't happen unless his mom gets the petition, which she won't even think about twice. Is there anything he can do?
