What is the name of your state? California
So, I'm a college student and was informed around Christmas day that due to a flood from the upstairs that there was water damage in our apartment and told us that they had to fix it. which is fine.
A lot of apartment complexes here in Davis, gave an extension on rent since students are all away on winter break... but not our complex. So I was forced to come back earlier on the 3rd. to pay for rent. I come home and find my apartment a complete mess. I can tell workers have been walking in and out in their shoes, and it's raining outside. We have no doors on any of the rooms and closets and one room is even blocked with this plastic, so we can't even get in. (picture: http://i19.tinypic.com/6xt2khf.jpg ), paint, tools and stuff everywhere. I can't take a shower and wash up since all the bathrooms are still under heavy repair and the house reeks of paint fumes, which I believe is a hazard... making it unsafe for us to live in.
I wasn't expecting a complete finish, but this was a bit ridiculous. They don't seem like they are anywhere finished and our apartment complex has been known to lag in repairs. It takes MONTHS for anything to get done... things that were reported in the beginning of the school year wasn't fully addressed even till today. They had over a week and in extreme cases such as ours, I would have expected that management would have done more to get things finished sooner...
Is there anything I can do? Do I have to live and sleep in this environment until they finish, which probably won't be for a while? I'm getting sick and dizzy even while I type this. I can't even comfortably open windows up to ventilate since it's constantly raining outside. Can I get any type of compensation?
