What is the name of your state? Michigan, but the crime took place in Indiana. My ex husband burnt down his house in June. It was a house that belonged to my parents and we purchased it from my father. My oldest son, age twenty, still lived with him at the time. Many of my things were still in the house and my son lost everything. His sentencing is the 22nd of Oct. I have heard that he plead down to only a few months in jail. This was a huge brick house that he poured paint thinner all over inside and lit it. There were firefighters injured fighting it. To top it all of my ex was an EMT and retired Navy. I wrote a letter to the judge hoping that he would lengthen the sentence but I don't know how much good that might do.

Is he responsible for the things of mine he destroyed? Is there any way I can protect myself from him? I feel that this crime was aimed to cause me pain. He has had mental issues in the past and I worry what might happen next. We also have two small children that are having issues with all of this. He has pressed contempt of court charges on me for the kids not writing to him and for me not leaving "their" phone turned on. He has my number but chooses not to call it. Am I really in contempt? Do I have to force my kids to communicate when they are scared and have so many emotions becasue of the terrible thing he did?

Thanks for your help,
Jackie

Well, it depends. If you didn't live there anymore, why were your things still there? Did you have renters or homeowners insurance which covered the items? If you essentially abandoned the items, they no longer belonged to you.

My son was still living there and some of the things were his that I gave him. Antiques that belonged to my parents. The things that belonged to me my ex let me keep there until I got a bigger place. He knew that I wanted these things and had offered to bring some to me but didn't.

If they were your sons, then they were covered by his renters policy. If they were yours, they were covered by your new home or renters policy.
