What is the name of your state? Texas
I had an Emergency Room visit for my child refered to a collection agency - while I was disputing the charges/EOB with my insurance company. I received daily calls to my home, work, and cell phone. All these phone numbers were provided as contact information when signing the hospital's paperwork for admission to the ER...
The collection agent that called was rude and aggressive. I remained calm while telling them, daily, the amount was being disputed with my insurance company. The longer I remained calm the agent would become more irrate.
So the next time they called I told them "one moment please, I am advising you this call is now being recorded, please state your name, agent id, agency, contact phone, file number, amount, and original creditor..."
Every time after that, is was Mr./Ms. Manners. I wasn't actually recording the call, but they didn't know that.... I've made that statement EVERY time an agent's attitude became unprofessional. Amazing. I'm not an attorney so don't know if it would be legal to record your call with a collection agent, I assume so if you advise them you are doing so.
Also, listen while you're talking to a collection agent for a little "beep" every 10 or 15 seconds - I believe it indicates THEY are recording your conversation. You know the message while on hold: "This call may be recorded for quality purposes." ?
