State: PA - Separated 8 months. Have seen a laywer several times and most recently, after several discussion with estranged H, we "worked" out (or I thought so) our settlement agreement. I actually drafted, had my attorney send to his attornwy and they countered (expected). I countered-countered and my attorney says she has not heard anything in over 1 month. I asked her to just go ahead a file for divorce and she said she would need at least $1700 in retainer. Unfortunately, if I had $1700 lying around that would be the first thing I would do with it - but I don't. She said that it is $1700 because without a settlement agreement there may be more "haggling" which will cost more money. Bottom line: Can I file for my divorce, via the local courthouse, myself? Do I need an attorney to file for me? I am not a stupid woman and work in an enviroment that is conducive to "legal beagles" - I also know how to research, etc. I can't see paying some attorney $1700 for something I can pretty much handle myself. Or, should I maybe switch attorney's? I really need some advice. Thanks.
