I need a question answered for this female freind of mine who has a boyfreind with self inflicted legal problems. He is a hard working man who has never missed a day of work but does have a meth habit.

hears the deal
He stops by walmart to get a few things leaving his dog in the car with the windows rolled up.It wasn't hot that day. Someone called the police with a complaint about the dog. When the police arrive they used a slim jim to gain entry to the car.The police searched for identification in the glove box and then searched in a laptop computer bag sitting in the back seat . In the bag they found a small amount of meth.
The police said it was an emergency so generally speaking I think the search was legal.

My question is if they found the registration in the glove box did they have the legal right to continue with the search of the computer bag?

I suspect yes but maybe I am wrong

The search was legal. When the officer opened the vehicle, he accepted responsibility for the contents of said vehicle. Of course he wants to make sure there is a laptop in the laptop bag. The vehicle owner can be held liable for anything illegal in the vehicle while the contents is being inventoried.

We don't do 'what ifs'. Either they found the registration or they didn't.

Unless you can come back here and say for sure where they found the registration and when during the search, then no one can answer to a certainty.

I will see if that information is available. Can the sequence of events possibly make it a bad search?
