What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MN.

This post is to inform and help those who are AWOL / Deserters who may be scared to turn themselves in. There is so much misguided info on the real process of what actually happens.

I went AWOL in October for family reasons and handed myself in to local police as soon as my warrant was issued. Fort Knox AWOL app team do call your local police station after they issue the warrant. Place went to my house, I was not there and later that day turned myself in. Which also placed me in the no flight risk. So MP's did not have to collect me. I was actually collected from jail by a local recruiter who took me to the airport to fly to Fort Knox.

If you do get arrested or hand yourself in to police, be aware that you will sit there for up to 7 days. I was there for 6. Police are not able to book you in as a civilian criminal and you are not meant to be kept in general population, though it happens and happened to me. Desertion is not a civilian crime.

Once you get collected you will be taken to Fort Knox or Sill. I went to Knox.
It is best to get there Tuesday night. Process in on Wednesday morning , see JAG on Thursday and leave on Friday. I was there from Saturday to Friday.
The staff at PCF at Knox are very nice and do not judge your situation. They are civilian security guards. Though there are MP's there.

There were guys who had been AWOL for 11 years, 3 years, 1 year and so forth. All had been Dropped from Rolls and all received a Chapter 10 in lieu of court martial. Which is an OTH discharge. This can and is often upgraded to a General if you apply an appeal. If you go to college, get involved with your community for example, the appeal board will more than likely upgrade your discharge.

PCF life. You get up at 5.30am. Get breakfast and clean. Do details and just wait the few days out to go home. Every case is different but out of all the guys who were there, perhaps 20 in that week, all got a CH 10. If you wish to remain in the Army, then you will get a court martial.
It is very very boring at PCF. The staff provide movies , books and games.
They will not treat you bad. I was worried about that. There is no fireguard or PT.
Release days are Tuesday at 11am and Friday at 11am.

I am just glad it is all over for me and can get on with life. Will life be hard with an OTH?. Sure, some people will have issues with it, most folks wont care.
Does life end?, heck no. I start college in January for Software Engineering and getting a job is no biggie in the tech world with an OTH, I work as an IT Developer . I am going to have it upgraded in the future to a general.

Once you have an OTH, you lose all benefits. If you get it upgraded, then you get your benefits. According to JAG, Out of the 70 people he had personally dealt with who were chapter 10 discharges, he had only seen a few get denied an upgrade. The internet is full of BS and idiots who think you should be thrown in jail. If you are a deserter, just hand yourself in.

PLEASE NOTE :
Fort Knox does not tell you the status of your package. They stopped all that.
