What is the name of your state? California

I have applied for asylum for my 72 year old mother in law who is from Zimbabwe. We have been ordered to appear in front of a Judge as our case could not be decided by INS. She came to stay with us while her son made arrangements to move from Zimbabewe to England. The country being what it is, circumstances forced him to vacate the country earlier than expected and there was no time to get my stepmother home to leave with him.

I was told by INS that if I applied by such and such a date and that if my application was post-marked by such in such a date that I would meet the 1 year dead line. As it turned out I was one day off in my calculation and hense one day late. Is this a show stopper??

Our other option is to have my wife apply for citizenship. If she is denied asylum, can we request and extension so that my wife can get here papers?
or
Can we request a temporary visa allowing her to travel to England until such time that my wife can become a citizen.

Do we have any options at all?? Sending her back to Zimbabwe would be horrible as she has no family left there and no economic means of support. She has a pension through a British business, but they have suspended payments in Zimbabwe to to the economic collapse of that country.
