I owe approx. $50,000 in back taxes covering a span of about 6 years. All years have been filed except last year. I've recieved many threatening notices which only increase my fear of caling on it. What kind of help should I seek? I have no tangible assets except a 401k.

Seek counsel from a tax attorney that specializes in workouts with the IRS.
Research the IRS website on Offers in Compromise.
