Hello, I just received news from my friend, that he received a background check for a job that came back as adverse. His credit report came back fine, however there was a claim against me, him and two of our previous roommates for roughly $1700. The claim was due to one of our other roommates not paying his rent. We were all on the same lease but billed separately so we didn't find out he was past due until we moved out. His father settled and paid the debt before it went to court. Anyways I'm assuming since it was in his background check it will also be in mine, if I apply for a job in the future. Should this be something I should worry about? How long will it stay on the record? My friend had an MIP while in college too, but my record is clean could that make much of a difference or is it the claim that would make our background checks adverse? Can we do anything to get this claim off of our record?

Contact your financial institution (your bank) or one of the major credit bureaus and order a credit history check on yourself. You need to see what's on there so that you're dealing with facts, not assumptions.

Not all prospective employers do credit checks - it depends on the type of job you are persuing and/or the type of industry. And even if a company does a credit check, whether that one incident matters (assuming it even shows up) is up to them.
