I LIVE IN WV AND HAVE MY OWN BUSINESS. IF I TAKE A CHECK FROM SOMEONE -- KNOWING THAT THE CHECK IS NOT GOOD , BUT THEY SAY THEY WILL MAKE A DEPOSIT BEFORE THE CHECK CLEARS -- AND THE CHECK BOUNCES -- ANYTHING I CAN DO

You can try to collect the money from them...they owe you the money whether you took the check on good faith or not. Did you already deposit the check? If not, you should call the bank and verify funds before you do so...

1) NEVER take a check from someone who tells you the check is no good at the time you accept it.

2) Contact your local sheriff or court and find out what information you need to prosecute a bad check charge. Most places require a description of the person, driver's license number, etc. NEVER accept a check from anyone in the future without that information first.

If you don't have the required info for the person who gave you this check, you're probably out of luck to collect on the current check.

I would make sure you can't collect it from the customer first, before pressing charges. If the customer had good intentions, he'll make good on it, and you can charge him a returned check fee...problem solved with little expense to you and a good (?) customer retained. If you can't get it from him, then pursue him through the court.

Sure, make me look like a bad guy :)

You're right... the poster should definately try the nice approach first.

There's just a special place in my heart for bad check writers. I don't seem to have much patience for them. To me, it's the same as stealing money right out of a person's wallet.

:)

That's true in some cases, but it depends on the intentions. The check writer came out and told him that the money wasn't there, but that he'd make a deposit to cover it. As long as he really does (preferably before the poster deposits the check), no harm done, right? I've done that before with friends or family members...here's a check to show my good faith, don't cash it until xx date.
