I got a home security system from a dealer that lives in my neighborhood. He had me sign a 3yr contract while verbally assuring me that my home was an "advertising location" and I only needed to keep the system 6-12 months. He also told me to lie to the monitoring company and tell them I am the homeowner when I am only a renter. He now denies saying any of that. I have also found out that he forged my landlord's signature on the paperwork and the monitoring company has asked I file a police report. I am trying to get out of the 3 year contract because I've had it for 7 months and he told me I could cancel after 6. He now denies ever telling me that. I told the dealer I would solicit the neighborhood just like he did and tell them that he uses dishonest sales tactics. He said I was threatening him and he would sue me for slander if I did that. My question is this...Is it slander if I report this to the neighborhood association so that my experience is printed in their newsletter as a way of warning other neighbors? Also, I have the alarm system sign in my yard. I really want to attach a piece of cardboard to the sign stating something along the lines of "beware of Safe and Sound Security" or "Don't get this system" with an arrow pointing to the security sign. Would it be libel if I do that? Or is there some way of making a publicly visible statement of my opinion without it being defamatory? Especially if the sign is in my own yard. Please advise. What is the name of your state?

If you can't prove that he told you lies, then you'd have no defense if he sued for slander. All you can say are opinions, such as that you weren't happy with the service, which is by no means grounds for a defamation suit.
