What is the name of your state?
KY

Several months ago I was behind on my personal credit card payment.
The collection agency called me a couple of times before I finally told them that I would be able to pay in full by the end of the week and not to call me anymore. I also told them that if they wanted to contact me again to do so through the USPS.

During that last phone call, the woman I was speaking to told me that making a payment of at least the past due amount and late charges on the day I said I would we'd be good as long as I went ahead and continued making regular payments. She was very accomodating, even pleasant, no threats or nastiness like I might have expected.

Now, I'm not making excuses for myself. I did owe the money and I was behind in my payments. I got myself into the mess and I was getting out of it on my own. And it was no one else's business. Or so I thought...

Two days before the day I told her I'd be making my payment, she called again. This time my husband answered. She told him everything...who she was, how far past due my payments were and even the exact amount I owed.

Even though it was solely my personal account and it was my money I was using to pay off my card's balance, he completely lost his temper and we had the mother of all arguments that evening. He was ready to walk out the door.

Fortunately, I finally convinced him that everything was under control. I paid off the entire balance on my card when I said I would and that was mostly the end of it. Money, mine or his, is still a touchy subject.

Did they woman from the collection agency have any business telling everything she knew to anyone at all? I didn't think this was legal. She didn't even know if she was really speaking to my husband. And she very easily could have cost me my marriage - things were that tense!

It's over and done with now, but what could or should I have done at the time if anything?

Thanks.

BTW I am completely debt free now that one card has been paid off.:D

If I remember correctly CAs are allowed to discuss details of your debt with your spouse. How did they know he was your husband? I don't know. How did they know you were you?

It doesn't sound like anything illegal happened here.

Actually, there are three states you cannot discuss with the spouse -- in one of them you can if the spouse says they are the spouse and asks what the call is about.
