does a sole proprietor have to have a business checking account??

I know of no law that requires that you have a business account, but you will probably have some problems without one. For example, what will you do when your customer wants to pay you, ask to leave the payee blank or to you personally. If you did this to me, I would doubt your integrity (possible scam or tax avoidance). Also, some business accounts require payment for goods. Offering a personal check is pretty unprofessional.
