I have several credit cards in default can creditors collect monies from bank accounts & etc. and do they have to call you into court to do this.
would it be better to file bankruptcy? :( uptight

Yes, creditors can take money out of your bank account but ONLY after they have sued you and won a judgment. So, YES, you would have to go to court - if you don't, they win by default and you don't want them to do that.

How old are the debts - when did you last pay the original creditors ?
 
Beware of set-offs!

If the creditors you owe have a relationship with the bank that you use they might be able to use a set-off of your account to recoup your money. They DO NOT have to have a judgment to do this. If this is the case, close your account ASAP and switch banks.
