Lawyer very difficult to contact.

Important dates missed that impacted on my rights in the case, no contact.

This lawyer has a great reputation and is a bear.

Does something prevent a lawyer from simply sending you a letter stating that they don't want to represent you? If so, what is that something?

No. A lawyer does not need to give you a reason why he does not want to represent you.

If I remember my logic classes correctly (and that assumption is questionable), this is what we would call a non sequitur.
