What is the name of your state? Utah

I'm not sure what to do. My friend has a clean record and first time being in trouble with the law. He has been charged with 2 counts of Forgery. Which are 3rd degree felonies each and 1 Class B Misdemeanor.

Should he just go to court and get a public defender, or hire an attorney of his own? What will most likely happen if my friend is convicted to these charges?

Thanks for any advice.
