I have signed a "letter of intent" (which is not a contract) to return to my teaching position. I am now being notified that if I resign my position during the school year that I will be charged $400 for advertising costs plus also up to 5 days for the cost of a substitute teacher. This "policy" was just recently added to the employee handbook (after signing the letter of intent). Since I am an "at will" employee and that gives my employer the right to terminate my employment for any or no reason without compensation, shouldn't that also give me the right to resign my position without negative consequences (especially finacially)?
