What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? florida
i was served papers almost a month ago for a debt lawsuit. Ive done my homework and finally found a lawyer I trusted. He agreed to take on my case for a good 2 weeks
we finally met up- he thought I was signing paperwork. I asked for another day or so since I wasn't feeling well. he was very nice and agreed. I called to ask if I could sign
the paperwork the next day (he would be out of town the rest of the week). He and his wife agreed. an hour before our appt, he called to tell me he can't represent me because
I stated that I hadn't intended on paying my debt back. To me his reasoning was bogus as he was ready to sign me the day before and surprised i wasn't there to sign. Also
his intent was to fight the suit which he does so successfully in most cases.
Why would this lawyer even do this? Willing to take on a case for 2 weeks, and even the day i was there to sign but backing out the next day.
I had also been calling the debt collection law firm to come to an agreement, and b/c i was desperate at this point
just agreed to a term which was 1000 in 3 monthly payments. I talked to a few other lawyers who were ok but they charged more than or the same amt as the settlement agreement.
I spoke with another lawyer today who was downright crazy and rude. He was so rude, talked over me and if I tried to talk he got angry and tried to control the conversation.
He finally said IM GIVING YOU TWO REFERENCES!!! as if i should be thankful, and then said THEN IM DONE WITH YOU! so i hung up. He was totally crazy and rude.
He was acting almost as if the county it was in and the courts he would end up spending a lot of time on the case and not get his fees paid properly- but he didnt explain it to me.
So far it seems many of these lawyers are acting very odd, and im not sure why. It's a small claims case of 2500. There is a lawyer willing to take on the case for 1000, another for 1200
and another for 750, but im not sure about their abilities or what is going on anymore. I'm going to most likely settle for the 1000 in 3 payments. I'd like to defend myself, but
there isn't much time and I don't have the time and energy to learn the proper motions and be sure I can do it right. How can someone find a legitimate lawyer for such a menial case
and why are these lawyers acting so weird about it. because the lawyers im speaking to sound either incompetent, or wishywashy, or some are crazy, it seems the best thing is to
just settle with the company.
